Alex Kendall co-founded Wayve in 2017 with the goal of rethinking autonomous mobility through embodied intelligence rather than legacy rule-based systems. Prior to Wayve, he completed a PhD at Cambridge focused on deep learning for computer vision and robotics, and his work earned the BMVA Prize (2018) and the ELLIS PhD Prize (2019). At Wayve, Kendall is responsible for charting the company’s overall direction.
Under his leadership, the business developed its proprietary AV2.0 approach — a camera-first, end-to-end learning model that avoids heavy reliance on HD maps and complex sensor stacks. The company has attracted significant investment (exceeding $1bn) and established itself in London with expansion into global markets. Kendall’s vision emphasises scalability: rather than crafting bespoke solutions for each driving environment, Wayve aims to deploy a unified AI driver that can adapt to new cities and vehicle platforms with minimal recalibration.
His leadership helps combine deep-tech research, robotics and commercial execution — bridging the divide between academic innovation and real-world deployment. In addition to his responsibilities at Wayve, Kendall is a fellow of Trinity College Cambridge and has been recognised as an influential figure in UK engineering and AI. Today, Alex Kendall continues to drive Wayve’s ambition: building the next wave of autonomous mobility, unlocking safer, more accessible and more sustainable transport systems through artificial intelligence.
